Manuel Antonio is the tropical wonderland most people envision when thinking of Costa Rica. The government declared this area a national park in 1975 in order to preserve the forests and biodiversity of this region. The National Park of Manuel Antonio is full of wild animals and plants including the three-toed sloths, purple-orange crabs, hundreds of species of birds, forty species of trees and an array of insects. Among the most favored animals are the monkeys. In the park you can find the Congo monkey, white-faced monkey, and the endangered Titi monkeys. Besides the animals that are protected in this green jungle, you will find exotic white beaches. Many tourists have rated these beaches number one in Costa Rica due to jungle like setting and peaceful atmosphere. In order to keep this beautiful park in a protected state, only 5% is actually open to the public. But, you will be amazed at how much this 5% has to offer. The park itself is 1,700 acres of protected forest with several trails leading from the small beaches up the mountainous range which opens up into splendid views. If you are interested in learning about the huge variety of flora and fauna, it is recommended to hike the trails with an experienced guide who can answer all of your questions and lead you to the best views and beaches in the park. |
