The
second furniture factory we visited is in Lomas de Cocori, just outside San Isidro.
This operation is run by a local named William Bermudez. The production and market
of this factory is a little smaller than at Agroindeba. William describes his
furniture as simple and economically reasonable in order to fit the middle and
lower class Costa Rican market. Costs are cut by using less details and ornamentation,
yet still maintaining a good quality product. William has a small plantation of about five hectares of bamboo and gets the rest from plantations owned by the University of Costa Rica and a few small farmers. The factory uses about 1,200 culms per month and like Agroindeba, the furniture is sold to distributors in Costa Rica who then sell to furniture stores. William hopes that local, small farmers will begin planting bamboo in the future which he can buy for further production. He is also open to the international market. |
