Costa Rica North Pacific Coast

Costa Rica North Pacific Coast... Sun, sea and savannah traditions

The Costa Rica North Pacific Coast, comprising the Province of Guanacaste and Peninsula of Nicoya, is a region where strong visitor numbers mingle with traditions and typical elements, characteristic of the Guanacaste province. Among these, the figure of the "sabanero" stands out, with his joviality and skill in handling cattle. This is why the "fiestas patronales" (county fairs), corridas (bullfightings) and bull ridings are a must in the region. The fairs always include a great variety of typical meals mainly based on corn.

The region has a strong influence in Costa Rican history, beginning in the Colonial period. In Santa Rosa National Park three important battles were fought, one which way back in 1856 meant for the victorious Costa Ricans, the acquiring national sovereignty over the territory that was attacked by foreign invaders.

Geologically, Costa Rica North Pacific Coast harbors some of the country's oldest formations, such as the caverns of Barra Honda National Park with its many stalactites and stalagmites. The park also protects important extensions of dry tropical forest, most of which is undergoing a regeneration process. The deciduous trees loose their foliage during the summer, creating a very diverse landscape, almost dessert-like, during the months of November through May. During the months of June through October, when the rivers' water flow is restored, these forests flourish into diverse tonalities of green. Some of the region's typical flora are the Ear pod, the national tree, savanna oak, and Naked Indian tree, named after its intense reddish colored trunk.

Some of the region's protected areas possess worldwide importance concerning wildlife species protection and constitute observation areas of great interest. This is the case with the Leatherback Turtle nesting in Playa Grande, the avi-fauna in the lakes of Palo Verde National Park, and Olive Ridley Turtle nesting in the Nancite and Ostional beaches. National parks such as Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park, also offer unique sites with their hot mud pools and lakes with constant fumarolic activity.

With its many beaches, the Costa Rica North Pacific Coast constitutes one of Costa Rica's most important tourism areas. It also has a varied offer in tourism infrastructure that includes services that are five star, and some of the best places to practice Golf and Sport Fishing, combined with a rich natural setting and a myriad of recreational opportunities. Ocean currents bring deep-ocean nutrients to surface plankton, which brings about the increase of rich marine biodiversity, favoring the abundance of species like the swordfish, Marlin and Dorado. Near the city of Liberia one of the main access points to the region's different attractions stands the Daniel Oduber International Airport that offers direct international access to the region. The International American Highway, in excellent conditions, also communicates this city and Guanacaste with the country's capital.

Guanacaste beaches, full of sun and activity, offer all types of outdoor activities, including Surfing, Scuba Diving and Snorkeling and Horseback Riding. Some of these beaches are true tourist centers, like Tamarindo and El Coco, while others are characterized by their remoteness. All however, seem to be made just for sports and sun lovers.
